The Netherlands off season – why go in winter
Unfortunately, the Netherlands does not attract too many tourists in winter, and it is a pity because even in this period it has a lot to offer visitors;-)
At this time of year, Amsterdam works great. The lack of crowds makes visiting the city more comfortable and pleasant. It is a great time to visit museums and galleries, without queues and haste. An additional attraction is the Amsterdam Light Festival, which illuminates the city with spectacular light installations. Evening walks along the canals are a great attraction! In the winter Amsterdam shows its more intimate and artistic face.
The colder months are also the time of outdoor ice rinks, which appear in many Dutch cities. If the weather is good and the temperature drops below zero, you can see the Dutch skating even on the canals – this is one of the most characteristic winter entertainment in the country of tulips 😉
A good idea for a winter trip is also Utrecht. An intimate city with a beautiful old town and cafes located below the street level. During this period, we can calmly, without haste, without crowds walking to discover the charms of this town. If we warm up, it is worth visiting one of the local cafes 😉
We recommend it, Koffie Leute Brauhaus. It is one of the most atmospheric places in Utrecht, especially in winter. Nice interior allows you to spend a few hours peacefully with good coffee. It is a place popular with local guests, perfect for cold days.
Another recommended place is Blackbird Coffee. A small classic in the city center. We can have a good coffee here and eat something sweet:) In winter residents often come here – before work or for a quiet afternoon with a book.
In winter, the cafes at Oudegracht, hidden in the former cellars just above the canal, are also great.
You can feel a similar climate in smaller cities, such as Haarlem or Delft, which in winter show a more peaceful side.
Winter in the Netherlands is great for spending time not only in cafes, but also in bars. Hot chocolate, mulled wine, local beers and cozy interiors make that even cloudy weather does not prevent you from enjoying the trip. If you want to go for a walk in the open air, it is worth going to the seaside – to Zandvoort or Scheveningen. Empty beaches, wind and wave views create a unique atmosphere, completely different than in summer.
The Netherlands in winter is a great choice for those who like quiet city breaks, sightseeing without queues and haste. This direction, which thanks to this calm atmosphere will certainly remain in the memory for a long time…
