Delft – The City of Blue Pottery and Canals You’ll Fall in Love With
If you want to experience the atmosphere of traditional Holland without the overwhelming crowds, Delft is the perfect choice. Tucked between The Hague and Rotterdam, it’s one of the best-preserved historic gems in the entire country.
Why is it worth a visit?
Delft is world-famous for two things: its iconic blue-and-white pottery (Delft Blue) and being the home of the master painter Johannes Vermeer (the man behind Girl with a Pearl Earring). As you walk along the canals, you’ll see rows of ancient trees and the famous „leaning houses.” These historic townhomes are tilted at such angles that look like they’re about to topple right into the water!
What can you see for free?
- The Market Square (Markt): One of the largest and most beautiful squares in the Netherlands. On one side stands the massive New Church, and on the other, one of the most ornate town halls you’ll ever lay eyes on.
- The Eastern Gate (Oostpoort): This place looks like something straight out of a fairy tale. It’s the only remaining city gate, featuring two twin towers sitting right on the water. It’s the perfect spot for a stroll and a photo that looks just like a postcard 😉
- The Leaning Tower of Oude Kerk: You don’t have to go to Pisa to see a leaning tower. The tower of the Old Church in Delft noticeably tilts toward the canal, and looking up at it from below is a truly surreal experience.
How to enjoy the city on a budget?
- Skip the pricey factory tours: If you don’t want to pay for an expensive ticket to the porcelain factories, just browse the local antique shops and galleries. Many of them feel like mini-museums, and admiring the beautiful craftsmanship is completely free. Keep an eye out for those signature blue patterns!
- Visit the street markets: Every Thursday, the main square hosts a flower and food market, and on Saturdays, you’ll find a charming antique market along the canals. These are the best spots to soak up the local vibe, chat with residents, and grab a cheap, fresh stroopwafel (a Dutch caramel waffle) served warm straight off the iron.
- Find some peace and quiet: If you need a break, there’s a public garden right next to the Prinsenhof Museum. You can relax on a bench surrounded by flowers and historic walls—all for free! 😉
Delft is the perfect destination if you want to see the „real” Netherlands at a slower pace and without breaking the bank. The city is compact enough to explore entirely on foot. If you’re looking for a day trip that will leave you with amazing memories, Delft definitely won’t disappoint. So, pack your comfortable shoes and hit the road!
